Gov. Jay Nixon held one of the longer gubernatorial press conferences in recent memory today, signing a number of bills on a wide range of subjects.

But it was a bill that was absent from his desk that sparked noticeable reaction from the first-term Democratic governor.

After signing legislation dealing with treatment of autism spectrum disorder, Nixon harshly criticized the Missouri House for not bringing a bill mandating insurance companies to cover treatments for the disease. The legislation easily passed the Missouri Senate, but did not come up for a vote in the General Assembly’s lower chamber.

Nixon said that he wouldn’t call a special session unless there was consensus behind passing the legislation. He also said he was still talking with legislators about a special session for a bonding initiative to fund capital improvement projects.
