Snap Shot of Entrepreneurship

I have to confess, I’m obsessed with entrepreneurship. Not just the start-up of new companies, but the core competency of invention. Seeing what other don’t, creating what others can’t, and having the faith in yourself and your idea to see it through.

We’re so blessed to be in a town with entrepreneurship as a vital and growing segment of the business community. This ranges from the start-up of new boutiques downtown to the creation of high-tech ventures, with international appeal. These companies drive job growth, tax revenue, and the atmosphere that Columbia enjoys. So, I’d like to take a moment to highlight and thank some up-and-coming local entrepreneurs for their contributions to our community.

Jake Shafer and Jamie Canine: These guys just make it happen. After buying the Ad Sheet, they’ve continued to build their media portfolio with the additions of Marketplace Magazine and TigerBoard. They’re always innovating new partnerships and opportunities that truly make an impact. Look for these guys to “go big” in the coming years.

Jim Spencer (and the Newsy.com crew): What do you get when you take an idea of international scope and combine it with venture capital financing and a public-private partnership? The answer is Newsy.com. Jim’s vision for his company, combined with his national contacts and willingness to constantly enhance his product will surely make this venture a resounding success.

Brian Whorley: Started with Tiger’s Takeout, then created an online retailer, and is now focused on creating the nation’s best restaurant delivery service software system (and is almost there). He’s definitely a guy to watch in coming years.

Keri Tipton and Jocelyn Tipton: As the owners of Bucket Media, they continue to make waves in the media placement world. They’re smart, love their craft, and have the ability to clearly see where their industry is headed. Watch these ladies continue to gain steam in the years to come.

Brock and Brant Bukowsky: Already two-time Inc. 500 award winners, these guys got the “stuff.” Their latest venture (Mortgage Research Center) has been the fastest growing company in Columbia, with somewhere north of 200 employees (could actually be far more than that now). I look forward to watching what comes next.

Jake Halliday: This is the guy who creates entrepreneurs. How cool is that? Between the Business Incubator and Centennial Investors, he’s the guy you call when you want to start something high-tech and high-growth.

This list is clearly not exhaustive, but hopefully gives a little well-deserved recognition. Look for a follow-up post in the coming weeks.
