Finding Help on Twitter

Most people understand social networking, but just don’t get Twitter. In a previous blog I mentioned that Twitter is a place where you become a resource and find other resources. I would like to provide an example of just how this works.

On Friday morning the 14th of August I made this post with my @CommercialScott account:

“Could someone help me with a #wpmu bug I’ve got? #wordpress8:32 AM Aug 14th from Tweetie ”

WordPress is a blogging platform and WordPress Multi-user is a platform to host other bloggers. The # which is called a hash tag in the world of Twitter designates that the word or characters attached to it are categories. If you read a Tweet with a hashtag in it you can click the word and it instantly searches for tweets containing the same hashtag. You can also use Twitter applications like Tweetdeck to create permanent searches for these tags so when someone uses it the tweet pops up on that list. I used the #wpmu and #wordpress tags because I was hoping to find someone that was familiar with these products.

In less than an hour I had an e-mail in my box from someone by the name of Glenn Ansley with a company called Full Throttle Development. They asked me if I still needed some help troubleshooting the bug to which I replied yes. I told them what the bug was and they asked me to send them a specific file to take a look. About 30 minutes later I got a response telling me they found what may be the problem was, told me how to fix it, and viola problem solved!

Full Throttle Development is a web development company based out of Realeigh, NC yet they were able to help someone in Columbia, MO fix their problem. By making themselves available as a resource and helping me I am now aware of their company and have a taste of their good service. This is true web 2.0 marketing and interacting at its best.
