In Jefferson City this afternoon, Gov. Jay Nixon, Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman and other public officials will take part in the dedication of a new renewable energy project. Landfill gas from the Jefferson City Landfill is captured and piped to the generation facility next to the City Correctional Center, where it is used to generate 3.2 megawatts of renewable energy. The renewable energy is purchased by Columbia Water & Light to meet the energy needs of its customers. In addition, the waste heat generated by the engines is captured and used to supply steam and hot water to the prison.
At the Columbia City Council’s dinner work session tonight, members will discuss the roles and responsibilities of the sustainability director, the Central Missouri Humane Society contract provisions and the proposed chicken ordinance. At the regular meeting, there will be a public hearing on the Columbia Regional Airport’s proposed Master Plan. At Shakespeare’s restaurant before the pre-council work session, Mayor Hindman will host a reception on non-motorized pilot projects.
Events later this week include the Women’s Network Luncheon on Thursday at PeachTree Catering & Banquet Center. Jonathan Sessions will overview social media products and trends and discuss the benefits and pitfalls of various social media tools.
