Back in August, the CBT held a Power Lunch on Sports & Business in which sports industry administrators and Julie Ausmus of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau talked about the economic power of Columbia’s sports industry.
Today, CVB Director Lorah Steiner pointed out that Columbia was recognized in the October 12 issue of The Sporting News as one of the best sports cities in the nation.
Columbia’s ranking of 56th out of 399 cities on the list. That places Columbia above cities such as Lawrence, Kansas; Iowa City, Iowa; Lincoln, Nebraska and College Station, Texas. Columbia ranked No. 2 among Big 12 cities, behind Oklahoma City/Norman, which was No. 37.
The annual list, titled, “The 399,” documents the top 399 sports cities in the United States based on a score generated using criteria including but not limited to, “won-lost records, postseason appearances, applicable power rankings, number of teams and attendance.” This year’s number one ranked city was Pittsburgh. Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles rounded out the top five spots.
