United Way and the Future

This morning I participated in the Heart of Missouri United Way’s annual board retreat. This was my first board retreat for the United Way and to be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. In the past, I’ve been a part of a number of “retreats,” which have lasted the better part of a day and were nothing more than an exercise in complaining or complimenting, resulting in very little of value.

This morning was one of the more pleasant surprises I’ve experienced in a while and it reinforced why I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Columbia.

This morning brought together a level of talent, caring, and expertise that was startling. Every attendee (around 25) woke up early and volunteered most of the day to make Columbia a better place. The tone in the room was honest, transparent, and vibrant, with everyone focused on exploring extremely complicated issues that are essential to our future.

The result? Only time will tell, but I can say that I couldn’t be more excited to be a Columbian. I hope you are too.
