A public hearing for an extension of Discovery Parkway from U.S. 63 to the intersection of New Haven Road and Rolling Hills Road got support from the council and representatives of MU’s South Farm complex Monday. The problem is there’s no money to pay for it.

As City Manager Bill Watkins explained, the public hearing was to be ready in case more federal money becomes available, either via the Stimulus bill or a new Jobs Bill being considered in Congress.

“I want everyone to understand that just because we’re having a public hearing doesn’t mean we’re ready top move ahead with construction,” he said.

The Public Works Department estimated the project would cost $4.3 million.

Fourth Ward Councilman Jerry Wade said the road will be important infrastructure in what he sees as an area that in 5-15 years will be very important for the local economy.

Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala said the stimulus “has provided an impetus for us to get our ducks in a row and do some planning.”

The council voted for staff to proceed with plans and specifications for the project.
