Me

Something I read recently stuck with me and I’ve been feeling a bit convicted by it ever since.  In short, the passage asked if I was open about my faith.  Do my friends, clients, and colleagues know I’m a Christian?  I couldn’t answer yes completely, so I am addressing it now.

In addition to proudly proclaiming myself as a Christian, I’d like to share some other insights about myself in hopes of better connecting with you, the reader of the CBT Blog Page.  BTW, thanks for your support!  I apologize in advance for such a self-centered entry.

As previously mentioned, I’m a Christian. I was baptized on my 35th birthday at Grace Bible Church, where I am a member.  I’m a believer because there is just too much evidence, in my mind, that a higher power must be in control.  Looking into the eyes of my little girls, who I love beyond understanding, and seeing that love returned is proof enough for me that God is real.  I invite you to join me any Sunday morning for the 11am service.

I have many interests, but can never seem to find something I’d call a hobby.  I love to watch movies, but haven’t watched an R rated one for the past few years.  I don’t need all the sex, violence, and negativity.  I’ve had my fill from real life, thanks.  I also want to set the best example possible for my girls.

I don’t drink alcohol, although I did, too much in fact, as a younger man.  I loved making my own beer and experimenting with the different ingredients. I still find home brewing to be incredibly interesting, but I’ve made a choice not to pursue it because it leads me down a path where I can quickly lose control.  The country song, “If I have one, I’ll have 13” hits close to home for me.  I also quit chewing tobacco nearly 3 ½ years ago.  All I can say is, “Don’t start!”

I’m a marketing junky.  I love unique concepts, ideas, tie-ins, partnerships, sponsorships, and events.  I spend more time at the grocery store checking out the different packaging of products than actually shopping. I’m the one person in America who will actually rewind through a commercial because I thought it was awesome.  I’ve been known to sing commercial jingles to my kids instead of nursery rhymes.  Logos fascinate me, as do books on marketing.

I LOVE to read, but never seem to have enough time or money to build the library I’d like to possess.  I’ve recently been listening to a lot of books on CD just to get my fix in. Who knew having 2 kids would limit my free time so much?  I prefer to read books that will help me learn new skills, improve my understanding of a specific subject, biographies, and occasionally a work of science-fiction.  I’ve always had an attraction to Sherlock Holmes books as well.

I enjoy music immensely, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t stir my emotions like it used to. I don’t know if that is because I’ve grown as an individual or because the music isn’t as touching as it used to be.  I suspect it’s both, plus some other factors.  One quirk about me is what I most enjoy about music.  I love when a singer expresses their emotions with a grunt, sigh, intake or exhalation of breath, or some other sound besides the lyrics.  I dig hearing the squeak of the guitarist’s fingers changing chords on an acoustic guitar. Survivor (Eye of the Tiger) has been my favorite band since the early 80’s and I’ve been fortunate enough to see them perform live on many occasions, and speak with the drummer after the show.  When I met the lead singer, Dave Bickler,  I was so star-struck that I stood there with my mouth wide open and stammered.  My wife, thank goodness, stepped up and helped the conversation along.

I’ve been married to Teresa for nearly 12 years (June 20th). She works with autistic children, and has the patience of Job.  She honestly does make me a better man than I could be by myself.  I probably don’t deserve her, but I’m thankful that God saw fit to share her with me.

After the passing of my Grandpa Schmitter, last year around this time, I began a quest of self-improvement and growth.  I took up jogging, after not exercising for nearly 15 years.  So far I’ve lost 30 pounds and look about 10 years younger.  I’ve started to experience & enjoy life to a greater extent.  Food tastes better to me, but I’m not controlled by it any longer. (Well, maybe a little by pizza and those addictive little Double Chocolate Nuggets by Hershey.  Mixing Dark & Milk Chocolate was a stroke of pure genius!)  I can’t begin to share all of the growth I’ve experienced in just the past year.  What I will share is that I’ve discovered my life vision, which is to own a professional sports team and use it as a vehicle and tool to spread the message of Christ.

That’s probably more than enough about me.  I do hope you’ve found something that relates to your life and will share it with me. I’m passionate about connecting with other positive, entrepreneurial people and would love to learn more about your life.  I’ll leave you with an inspirational quote, which happens to be another interest of mine, “Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.”  — Basil King, Canadian author and pastor
